Nutrition
Nutrition
Nutrition is a very complicated topic. Each person's body has its own way of functioning and its own issues, based on genetics and lifestyle. The "My Plate" diet recommendation from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is a starting place. But each of our bodies may not respond ideally to this type of diet, especially if we have any food allergies or health issues.
As a Health Coach, part of the program is to determine your current health status and your health goals, and provide education and support to help you achieve your goals. Nutrition is an extremely important factor in your overall health. At Coach4HealthyLife, we'll work with you to help you establish a nutrition strategy that works best for your body.
Weight Loss
If your goal is to lose weight, nutrition is the most important factor to a successful outcome (though it is not the only factor). The way to lose weight is to burn more calories that you consume. Measuring the calories you consume is much easier that measuring the calories your body burns, which is your body's metabolism. There are many calculators that are approximations based on your gender, age, and size (height/weight). But there are many other factors that impact your metabolism, such as the amount of muscle mass you have and whether you have any metabolic function health issues, such as Type II diabetes or liver issues.
Navigating Your Nutrition
Whether you're trying to lose weight or address other health concerns, this may be a difficult process as there is still a huge amount of unknown information when it comes to nutrition and health. However, the Coach4HealthLife program will include learning about the basics of nutrition and biochemistry, and providing you with the latest research on nutrition and food topics. To achieve your health goals, it's critically important that you know what you are putting into your body, and how your body reacts to it. Reading labels on food and understanding terminology of ingredients and nutrition facts will be critically important to understanding, deciding, and controlling what you put into your body.

Some Basics about Nutrition
Food, and the biochemistry of your body breaking down (digesting) that food, starts with the 3 macro nutrients:
Protein
Carbohydrates
Fat
Working with Coach4HealthyLife, you'll learn key digestion and nutrition facts about these macro nutrients, and how they impact your health.
Micro nutrients include things like vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, enzymes, probiotics, fiber, etc. This area of nutrition is still largely unknown, with new information still being discovered. It can be difficult to hike through the mountains of often conflicting information about new nutrition discoveries and claims.
A certified health coach has been trained in nutrition science. At Coach4HealthyLife, your coach also has a biochemistry degree (Bachelor of Science from University of Wisconsin - River Falls) and additional nutrition certification (ACE Fitness Nutrition Specialist) and college coursework in nutrition (Central Arizona College).
